Bead Knotting For Beginners
The traditional technique used for bead knotting is not hard to learn, in fact, most pearl necklaces are knotted using this method. The traditional method for bead knotting will add an extra finished look to pearl, as well as other beaded necklaces. The most difficult part of traditional knotting is getting the knot snug up against the bead. However, as with all jewelry making techniques, the more you practice, the more skilled you will become.
Whether you knot occassionally or full time a good way to do it is find a strong pin like a corsage pin or a stick pin that is very thick and sturdy. (Using a straight pin is too difficult as it is not strong enough). If you are looling for a more advanced approach with your bead knotting equipment look into a "tri-cord knotter" which is essentially a combination of an "awl" and a pair of "tweezers". These tools can make it simpler for you to make consistently tighter knots. Alot of bead vendors sell tools which are specifically made for knotting, some of them offer books and videos to help you with this technique. Bead Knotting Quick Steps
For a quick demonstration of traditional knotting using a strong pin you need your beads and chord of choice. For the best results try matching your beads to the color of your cord. To begin, the necklace is started as you would string your beads on any other beaded necklace. Once the necklace is started, string the first bead, tie an over hand knot and keep it close. Insert your pin through the loose knot. Next, use the pin to push the knot down toward the bead until the knot and pin are flush with the bead. Now, this part is a little bit tricky, but keep the knot up against the bead (not overly tight) while you slip the pin out. Now, take the pin and hold it on top of the cord and up against the knot, pull the cord with one hand and push the knot against the bead using the pin in your hand. Lastly, repeat these steps after each bead is strung. After the first time you do this you will get a feeling of what is most comfortable for you. Keep working at it untill you find your own groove.
